Getting Around the Virgin Islands

There are several safe and fun options for getting around or between the different individual Virgin Islands! Conveniently, there are airports located on both St. Thomas and St. Croix, which allow you to “island hop” in style in just 25 minutes time. The majority of inter-island travel comes from the ferry systems and water taxis, however. St. John, for example, does not have an airport, and thus must be reached by boat. Car ferries are available for those who have vehicles and want to move with them between the USVI.

A rental car is the one of the best choices for travel in the US Virgin Islands, especially if you are going to be doing a lot of exploring. Rental cars are easily obtainable and usually located cruise ship docking areas and airports. Many visitors opt to rent motorized scooters instead, a great way to get more gas for your buck while enjoying the sweet Caribbean air.

A note to our first timers: In the Virgin Islands, cars drive in the left lane and the driver seat is also reversed from US standards, like in the United Kingdom. This can be confusing and disorienting at first so take it slow and be wary behind the wheel. Also note that many of the roads are very steep and narrow, or simply rough in nature, and many street signs are either worn down or covered by vegetation.

Taxi cabs are extremely popular choices for getting around, both on the water and the land, and those who opt not to rent a vehicle will find that they are still well accommodated with an abundance of rides available near docks, airports, attractions, and other popular areas Look out for converted truck taxis called “safari buses.” These open-air taxis have been modified with metal benches in the back for passengers and short distance fares can often be purchased for a just a dollar, hence the name, “dollar rides.”

There are public bus services on St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, but the schedules can be unreliable and taxi cabs are so much easier and more accessible. Private driver services can also be purchased at several locations on the islands.
