Taxis on the Virgin Islands

Open air "safari cabs" are converted trucks and SUVs found in abundance on both St. John and St. Thomas. These cabs make loops between the University of the Virgin Islands, past the airport to Red Hook, by the east-side marina, and finally passing through Charlotte Amalie before repeating the route. Rides in these “safari buses” are very inexpensive—thus the coined term “dollar rides.”

Regular taxicabs are also easy to find and the drivers are easy to flag down as they go along. Taxi rates are set in stone by the Virgin Island Taxicab Division, so instead of a meter, fares are calculated by destination and by how many people are riding. Taxis are an excellent transportation choice for visiting the Virgin Islands, because the fares are inexpensive and there are a plethora to choose from in any area that draws people. If you don’t want the expense or the hassle of a rental car, taxi services are a great option.
