Getting to USVI by Cruise Ship

Taking a cruise that stops at the US Virgin Islands is a great way to get a taste of what this destination has to offer. St. Thomas is a popular cruise ship destination and St. Croix and St. John also receive a few calls from cruise ships throughout the year. Many of the cruises will require you to fly to Puerto Rico to board the ship, but some itineraries will begin in mainland US – such as in Miami, Florida for example.

Some of the cruise lines that stop in the USVI include Celebrity, Carnival, Holland America, Premiere, Princess, Seabourn, and Royal Caribbean.

USVI via Ferries and Water Taxis

Ferries run between all of the three US Virgin Islands and link them together with the British Virgin Islands. On a seasonal basis the ferries also run between USVI and Puerto Rico. There is a ferry terminal in Charlotte Amalie that is used for ferries going to the British Virgin Islands. There are two ferry departure points on St. Thomas for the passenger ferry to St. John.

To get between the US Virgin Islands you can take the water taxis, which are available on demand throughout the day and evening.

Traveling By Boat between the US Virgin Islands

If you have your own boat you can sail to the US Virgin Islands. In fact, the sunny weather, reliable trade winds, gorgeous scenery, protected anchorages, and short distances between islands make USVI one of the best sailing destinations in the world.

When you arrive here you will find welcoming, high-quality facilities that are set up to accommodate vessels of all shapes and sizes for both long and short term visits. St. Thomas and St. Croix have marinas with long term facilities, and there are anchorage sites and moorings around all four islands. Both St. Thomas and St. Croix have active yacht clubs.
